Sewajyoti is running a host of programmes in Jhunjhunu district to spread literacy, encourage talented students and bring higher education to the local students. It also conducts special classes for students belonging to backward and ignored sections of the society and has carried out steps to provide basic facilities to the students of rural primary schools. For many years, the organization has been rewarding meritorious students by the way of scholarships and awards. Students of many villages near Nawalgarh have benefitted from such schemes and programmes. Hundreds of pupils belonging to poor families have found a new source of hope in Sewajyoti.
This is a highly unfortunate fact that Jhunjhunu district is home to hundreds of child laborers. Sewajyoti has traditionally been concerned at children losing their childhood to meet their families’ financial needs. It is difficult to convince such children and their parents to let their children live their normal childhood. However, we realized that we can still persuade them to attend classes during their spare time without affecting their daily routine. Sewajyoti believes that any effort to change child laborer’s lives begins with educating them.
The organization, under a scheme approved by the Labour department of the government of India, started running two schools for child laborers in Nawalgarh tehsil. In each school, 50 students were taught by three teachers each. The schools also provided mid-day meals to the children. The schools were managed in a highly professional manner and encouraged some of the children to take up formal education.
The organisation feels that other social organisations should also
attach importance to teaching child laborers as education can indeed
become a motivating factor in their getting rid of this menace.
Another initiative taken by Sewajyoti is to construct kitchen sheds for mid-day meal scheme run by Jhunjhunu district administration in the area’s government schools. This made it very difficult for the school staff to maintain proper hygiene and manage the cooking and distribution work. Sewajyoti came forward with an offer of providing kitchen sheds to these schools, which was accepted by the officials. Sewajyoti constructed kitchen sheds in 10 government schools in 2005 which drastically changed the situation. The sheds are still in use.
In another initiative, the organization distributed school uniforms among five thousand school-going children of Nawalgarh and adjoining areas. There was no limit to the happiness of the kids when they wore the new uniforms distributed by Sewajyoti for the first time in 2004.
Sewajyoti presents ‘Shri Radheshyam R Morarka Memorial Award’ meritorious students of Shri Radheshyam R Morarka Govt Post Graduate College, Jhunjhunu on an annual basis. Toppers in every class and faculty receive financial reward apart from certificates. Scholarship programmes are not limited to the only. The organization has a separate programme to encourage intelligent students of other educational institutions as well.
